Micro-Credentials

Several of the Lab’s jigsaw modules take the form of micro-credentials. Administered by FIU’s Office of Micro-Credentials, these modules earn learners badges: digital representations of competencies gained.

These badges can be displayed on resumes, shared on social media platforms, and embedded in the earner’s e-mail signature, each indicating to future collaborators and employers that the earner has developed a particular skill set.

FIU’s Credly page lists the badges currently available to the FIU community.

Across several institutes faculty fellows develop what will collectively become a cluster of micro-credential badges. In these mini courses students learn how to map patterns between fiction and science.

A fiction-science micro-credential badge certifies that the earner has gained interdisciplinary proficiency across a STEM field and literary studies, for example, Fiction and Chemistry; Fiction and Engineering; Fiction and Mathematics.

Thus, a badge in Fiction and Forest Ecology indicates that the earner has competency in comprehending and communicating forest ecology in terms of literary narratives, and literary narratives in terms of forest ecology – in other words, interdisciplinary proficiency.

This proficiency enables the earner to convey a complex scientific phenomenon or describe an elaborate narratological technique to a nonspecialist audience by way of analogy – a vital communication competency in the 21st century job market.

Upon earning any four badges in this series, learners attain a meta-badge in Fiction-Science Pattern Mapping.
